The top story from labor day weekend is that parts of Minnesota have turned into a ‘police state’ controlled by armed local and federal enforcers. Days prior to the RNC (Republican national convention), houses apparently owned and occupied only by people innocent of any crime were raided (with doors smashed in) at gunpoint and people were harassed and arrested. It appears the police were attacking and terrorizing people who planned peaceful demonstrations.
Attorneys who previously helped release people illegally arrested in 2004 New York RNC and in Minnesota for a similar means, were thought to also be targeted by the police.
Glenn Greenwald has been covering the event on his extraordinary website: Glenn Greenwald, Salon.
Additional detailed coverage is at The Uptake.
When news reporters ran to cover the event, with full press passes displayed, they also were forcibly arrested. SF Gate has the video of one prominent reporter (Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now”) giving an interview after her release from prison. Glenn Greenwald’s site has a video clip of her unlawful arrest.
Police acted in similar manner at the recent DNC in Denver. The American public strongly dislikes the Republicans, as evidenced by the President’s extremely low approval ratings (dipping as low as 25%). Polls also show a strong dislike for Democrats (Democratic controlled congress has an even lower approval rating than the President, dropping to the lowest ever, at under 13%). Militaristic measures are one of the main reasons the Democrats and Republicans keep power, against the public’s will – even when their most popular member severely undermines the Constitution for corporate profits (see Obama, FISA).
Glenn Greenwald, from the site in Minneapolis:
“St. Paul was the most militarized I have ever seen an American city be… — with troops of federal, state and local law enforcement agents marching around with riot gear, machine guns, and tear gas cannisters, shouting military chants and marching in military formations. Humvees and law enforcement officers with rifles were posted on various buildings and balconies. Numerous protesters and observers were tear gassed and injured.”
